Dog is God spelled backwards.
I don’t think that is a coincidence.
God is love.
Dogs are love.
I am by no means putting God and dogs on level turf.
Humans fall short when it comes to unconditional love – the love that God gives us.
Yet, dogs do a mighty fine job. I’ve seen dogs that have been beaten go back to love on his punisher. There are dogs left outside and neglected that get excited to see those who have forgotten them.
Those are qualities us humans should have. Unconditional love with forgiveness.
Yes, there are times when we need to forgive and walk away.
Yet many times forgiveness should come with reconciliation.
Dogs don’t care if you ask for forgiveness or say you are sorry. They forgive before you’ve even thought about asking.
What would it be like if “the person(s)” in your life were waiting excitedly at the door every single time you walk through? Heck even if it would be occasionally for some would be a treat.
How would it feel if “your person(s)” wanted to spend time with you so much they follow you room to room? They sit in the corner and just wait for you to move so they can shadow you.
Wouldn’t it be grand if “your person(s)” would want to walk with you by your side, sit with you and listen when you speak – with undivided attention?
I’ve always said dogs fill in the holes that humans can’t. I believe that was God’s purpose with dogs.
What other creature looks at you with eyes that say, “I adore you”? What other creature shows their love and excitement by circling you – around and around? What other creature heals the heart just by their closeness - offers a safe place for those burdened to unload the words that will lighten their shoulders?
They can do all of that and healing of hurts while sobbing into their furry necks when humans can’t or won’t listen.
They listen fully not thinking about their response to you while you are speaking. They don’t need to rebut or argue what you’re trying to share.
They just are.
No one is too fat, not pretty enough, have a good enough sense of humor. It doesn’t matter what skills you have or the balance in your checkbook. It’s OK if we are awkward or bashful or even somewhat backwards.
There’s no DEI in dog world.
People will tell me “The way you take care of your dogs, man, they’ve got it made.”
I smile and think, if you only knew the holes in my heart that are no more.
