Word Value

Now, here are some real, genuine heroes.

Now, here are some real, genuine heroes.

The other day Farmer and I were in town and went through drive-through at Arby’s. Farmer had a hankering. When we pulled up to the window to pay there was a neon callout poster that read – Heroes work here

Um . . . a hero? Really? A few people working together cooking food and handing it out through a glass window are heroes? Not in my book.

While I appreciate them being there at their job, doing their job I do not consider it hero material.

Hero definition - a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

Please don’t cheapen the word.

A hero is any military, police, firemen, first responders and all medical personnel and could be reserved for a few others. They are the ones walking into the unknown. They are the ones taking the bullets, fighting an inferno, pushing the enemy back and now, with this virus, going head to head with an unknown possible killer.

When a first responder answers a call, they have no idea to what they will be exposed. A domestic call for police is dicey, you never know what the emotions have done to the parties involved. Firemen  force their way through hellish flames to search for victims. We all know the dangers of our military. Medical personnel have been involved in their own battle fields lately.

So, to have a proclamation of heroes working at Arby’s. I don’t think so. It pretty much devalued the word.

Don’t cheapen words of importance.
